There is a hint of Passion Sunday in the Scriptures assigned for this day. The Song of the Suffering Servant from the Prophet Isaiah (50:4-9) is paired not with the Lord’s Passion, but rather with Peter’s confession of faith (Mark 8:27-35). What is unique in Mark’s account of this recognition of Jesus as the Messiah is the nearly immediate betrayal of the saving mission by the one who voices the faith of us all. How easy it is to profess faith and also deny the implications of this faith! We find an echo of this in the Collect for tomorrow’s Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross:
O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son should undergo the Cross to save the human race, grant we pray, that we, who have known his mystery on earth, may merit the grace of his redemption in heaven.
May the week ahead be filled with countless graces and blessings!
