Throughout the school year, Blessed Sacrament works with Family Christian Center and other area churches to provide backpacks of food for distribution at area schools. The program is designed to feed elementary school children whose families have little to no food on the weekends.

Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.

While we have watched the students benefit from this school-year program, the growing need for food on the weekend raised concerns about how these students would eat during the summer months. This past summer, the volunteers at Blessed Sacrament worked to make sure those students had food.

For 8 weeks throughout July and August, volunteers distributed meals every Wednesday from the campus of Blessed Sacrament’s mission, Santo Toribio Romo in Mascotte. Their hard work provided 3,336 meals that students in need wouldn’t have had throughout the summer months.

If you would like to know more about how to join this ministry, contact the parish office at (352) 394-3562. The program is funded through the second collection on the second week of each month.
