In the practice of the Levitical Office, the High Priest, after the offering of the sacrifice in the courtyard of the temple would return (alone) the “Holy of Holies.” Only after this was done was the sacrifice completed. So too, on this day of the Ascension, we observe that the self-sacrifice of Christ has been made in the center of creation, and that he, who is both Priest and Sacrifice, returns to the “Holy of Holies” to complete the sacrifice which brings about our redemption. He gives us strength and courage to enter into holiness of life and follow to where he has lead!
Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that we who believe that your Only Begotten Son, our Redeemer, ascended to the heavens, may in spirit dwell already in heavenly realms!
Next Sunday, the 50 days of Easter come to their completion as we observe the Solemnity of Pentecost. The red vestments of this day, while reminding us of the Blood of Christ which was poured out for our salvation, also remind us of the fire of the Holy Spirit and of how our hearts are to burn within us with the fire of His love!
May this ultimate (not final!) week of Easter fill us with a matured faith and may we eagerly anticipate and receive “a new flood” of the abundant gifts of the Holy Spirit to come upon us!
