The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

Two pairs of fisherman brothers are “called” to follow the Lord in a deepened way (Mark 1:14-20).  Peter came to follow Jesus at Andrew’s urging (John 1:35-42). Andrew, who had been a disciple of John the Baptist, recognized the “Lamb of God”. The sons of Zebedee, James and John, busy at the task of tending their earthly father’s fishing nets, cast aside their nets and followed at the Lord’s bidding. Each, sharing the faith of their ancestors, hoped for the coming of the Messiah.  With hearts which were fertile ground, both saw and heard the Lord Jesus, left behind earthly cares, sought to deepen their faith, and followed the One who would lead them into deeper waters than they had ever fished before! No longer would they fish in the shallow waters!

Of course, we are both “caught like fish” and mature to be “fishermen”, too!  We are “caught” through the Sacraments of Initiation but continually challenged to grow and mature in the faith of our ancestors that we might be “fishers of men”. We pray for one another that our faith may continue to mature and give glory to the one who has both “caught us” and caused us to grow in wisdom and grace. We pray, also, for those who will deepen their commitment to the Lord by following in the paths of Holy Orders and Religious Life:

Holy Father, who, though urging all the faithful to perfect charity, never cease to prompt many to follow more closely in the footsteps of your Son, grant, we pray, that those you have chosen for this special calling may, by their way of life, show to the Church and the world a clear sign of your Kingdom.

In the next weeks we will begin the annual Our Catholic Appeal. I still sit in awe at your generosity which saw a successful completion to last year’s appeal (2014). At the Mission, 117 pledges not only completed the assessment, but exceeded it by $4,333! And the news is equally as wonderful at Blessed Sacrament as 1013 pledges exceed our assessment by $27,691! The assessments for 2015 are as follows:

  • Blessed Sacrament        $266,512
  • Santo Toribio Romo        $13,018

As ever, I thank you for your kindness and generosity!

Lastly, I would like to offer a word of thanks to all who participated in the Funeral Rites for Father Mark Wegg this past Monday. In a special way, I am so very grateful to our parish Council of Catholic Women (CCW) for preparing and serving the reception which followed the Funeral Mass.

May the week ahead be filled with countless graces and blessings!

Fr. Bob
